A very small bird (14-16 cm) breeding in northern Siberia and Alaska, migrating to se Asia, Japan and Australia. A very rare vagrant to southern Africa, it inhabits tidal mudflats, lagoons and saltpans and lives off worms, arthropods and mollusks.
