A very small bird (14-15 cm), the smallest wader in southern Africa. It breeds in northern Europe and Asia and migrates to southern Asia and Africa. It is a common migrant found throughout southern Africa. It inhabits muddy shores, tidal flats lakes pans etc, is gregarious by nature, living off mollusks, crustaceans and insects.
