A small bird (about 20 cm) which breeds in the extreme northern Siberia and migrates to Africa, Madagascar, southern Asia and Australasia. It is a very common migrant found throughout southern Africa. It inhabits seashores, inland pans and dams and vleis. It lives off worms, mollusks and larvae
