A smallish bird (about 17 cm) breeding in northern Europe and Asia, and migrating to Africa, southern Asia and Australia. In southern Africa it is a rare migrant, inhabiting marine beaches and brackish river pools close to the coast. It eats mollusks, worms insects and seeds.
