A smallish bird (18-20 cm), which breeds in the high latitudes of the Holarctic and migrates to the open sea off the west coasts of Africa and South America. In southern Africa it is a common migrant found off the coast of Namibia and the western Cape. It lives off plankton, insects and crustaceans.
