A medium bird (46 to 47 cm), breeding in the north Holarctic region, and migrating to the tropical and temperate southern oceans. It is found in all offshore waters of southern Africa.  It is a fairly common non-breeding migrant, and feeds on fish and offal, both from stealing from gulls, and from following boats
