A large bird (51 to 61 cm), breeding in the western palearctic, and migrating to southern Europe, Arabia and Africa. In southern Africa it is an uncommon migrant found along the Zambezi, in parts of the Transvaal and along the east coast. It inhabits coastal and inland waters and feeds off offal, scraps and dead fish
