A medium bird (41 to 43 cm), found in Africa south of the Sahara, Madagascar, and south America. In southern Africa, it is found along the coast and in inland waters. It is a common or abundant resident or local migrant, inhabiting larger dams, estuaries, coastal lakes and seashores. It is gregarious and feeds off offal, scraps and fish.
