A smallish bird (38 to 43 cm), breeding in the Palearctic and migrating to the Mediterranean, Red Sea and Persian Gulf. It is a very rare vagrant to Southern Africa, found on inland and coastal waters. It feeds off fish, offal, worms and mollusks.
