A medium bird (38 to 41 cm), breeding in the southern parts of North America, the Carribean and South America, migrating to the tropics when not breeding. It is a rare vagrant to southern Africa, inhabiting the larger inland lakes and pans. It feeds off fish, crustaceans, frogs and lizards.
