It is the smallest of African owls (18 to 19 cm), found in Africa south of the Sahara. In southern Africa it is a common resident found in the central and northern areas. It is solitary or in pairs and inhabits bushveld and woodland. It is partly diurnal and lives off arthropods, rodents and bats
