A medium bird (25 to 28 cm), breeding in Europe and Asia, and migrating to Africa and southern Asia. In southern Africa it is a common non breeding migrant, absent from the dry west. It inhabits woodland, savanna and gardens, and returns to the same site year after year. It eats flying insects.
