A medium bird (23 to 24 cm), found in Africa from Natal to Ghana and Ethiopia. In southern Africa it is a common resident found in the east, northeast and north. It is usually solitary or in pairs and inhabits scrub with open sandy ground. It eats insects (especially beetles).
