A smallish bird (19 to 20 cm), found from southern Africa to Angola and Ethiopia. It is an uncommon resident absent from the drier western parts of southern Africa. It is usually solitary and inhabits fast-flowing perennial streams and rivers with dense vegetation. It eats fish, crabs and insects.
