A medium bird (22 to 24 cm), found in Africa from South Africa to Gabon, Zaire, Kenya and Somaliland. It is a common resident in the eastern half of southern Africa. It is solitary or in pairs, inhabiting thickets in forests, coastal bush and parks and gardens. It lives of insects.
