| A medium bird (25 to 29 cm), found in Africa south of the Sahara, and the Nile valley; and in the middle east and southern Asia. In southern Africa it is a very common resident absent from the Kalahari and drier west. In inhabits rivers and lakes and is solitary or in pairs. It hunts by hovering over the water and diving into the water for the fish. | |
