AFRICAN HOOPOE

Also known as Hoopoe

(Upupa africana or Upupa epops)

Roberts VII has classified the African Hoopoe
as a separate species (following Monroe & Sibley),
(It is considered a sub-species of the Hoopoe 
or Upupa epops africana by other authorities)

The African (sub) species is found in Southern to Central Africa,
while the Eurasian Hoopoe is found in the Sahel from West Africa across to East Africa.

A medium bird (25 to 27 cm), found throughout southern to central Africa and Madagascar.  In southern Africa it is a common resident found throughout the area. It inhabits savanna and open woodland and lives off insects.
