A large woodpecker (23 to 25 cm), which is found from South Africa to the Sudan and Ethiopia. In southern Africa it is a fairly common resident found in the central to northern parts. It inhabits the drier savanna and woodland, and is usually found in pairs. It eats insects, spiders and geckoes.
