A small bird (11-13 cm), found in Africa south of the Sahara. It is widespread throughout southern Africa, locally abundant in numbers sometimes reaching plague proportions (flocks of hundreds of thousands).  It inhabits savanna and agricultural land and eats seeds and grain.
