A medium bird (16 cm), found from South Africa to north east Africa. In southern Africa it is an uncommon resident distributed from Natal through Zimbabwe to the Caprivi. It inhabits ranks grass and weeds and eats seeds, grain and insects. It is gregarious in small flocks.
