A smallish bird (12 cm non-breeding, 25-30 cm breeding), found in Africa south of the Sahara. It is a locally common resident, found in moister south-east and highveld of Natal through to Zimbabwe. It is gregarious, inhabiting rank grass in vleis and living off seeds and insects.
