A medium to large bird (22 cm non-breeding, 55-60 cm breeding), found discontinuously from South Africa to Kenya. It is a very common resident found in South Africa from the eastern Cape to the Transvaal highveld. It is gregarious, inhabiting open grassveld and eating seeds and insects.
