A small bird (12-13 cm (female), 26-34 cm (male including tail) found in Africa south of the Sahara. It is a common resident over most of southern Africa, absent from Namibia. It inhabits open savanna and is gregarious. The male is extremely aggressive to other birds at a seed table or defending its territory.
